Film Stylo

A filmmaking and mental wellness initiative.

About

Film Stylo’s mission is to provide a creative platform for teenagers to share their perspectives, facilitate mental wellness discussions, and foster a culture of empathy through the power of film.

Despite an increased awareness of mental health in recent years, many teenagers find it difficult to express their experiences and problems, making it harder for others to understand them and involve them in wellbeing discussions.

Film Stylo addresses this issue by inviting students aged 12-18 to create films each year based on a common theme, culminating in screening events that offer authentic insight into their lives, celebrate student creativity and spark dialogue around their voices.

Film Stylo 2024

The Human Touch

As technology and artificial intelligence develop at a rapid pace around us, the question of what makes us human becomes all the more important. This year, we invite students to create personal films (1-3m in length) inspired by the theme ‘The Human Touch’ to compete in Film Stylo. Submitted films will be considered for our annual Shortlist and Top 5 Awards, announced in May.

Submissions for Film Stylo 2024 have now closed.

Background

Film Stylo was initiated by Babel Film Workshop founder Jeremy Hung during his arts residency at Yale University in 2020. While developing a filmmaking curriculum that emphasizes teenagers’ personal voice, he met Dr. Eunice Yuen, a child psychiatry fellow at the Yale School of Medicine, who identified possible therapeutic benefits of the curriculum on adolescent mental health.

As COVID-19 began to impact students worldwide, Jeremy and Dr. Yuen launched Film Stylo as a creative outlet and coping mechanism for teenagers in Hong Kong, U.S., U.K. and India facing unprecedented mental health challenges, and co-authored a research study on it. Since then, over 400 students have participated in the initiative, with some films featured at international arts and film festivals.

Film Stylo provides not just a creative outlet for students, but also a platform to share emotions.
